Sophia Academy

Sophia Academy

Our program success comes from small class size which allows for individualized and specific instruction. All students receive educational benchmarks. Students with learning differences receive detailed, personalized goals and accomodationas and modifications, all of which are reviewed frequently to support student success. For reading and spelling, we use the internationally acclaimed Orton-Gillingham approach. It is sequential and multisensory - letters are learned in specific groups in all learning modalities, which improves decoding of the English language. Georgia Common Core Standards guide the challenging, comprehensive curriculum. Organizing information, both physically and mentally, is imperative to effective learning. The schoolwide, systematic Sophia Academy Organizational System is followed in all classrooms and in student organizers. For the most engaging instruction, all of our classrooms are equipped with technology, including LCD projectors and white boards. Most classes utilize interactive Promethean boards, which allow for a more hands-on learning environment and encourage student participation. Every Sophia Academy student is evaluated for assistive technology devices and software, which enhance learning, and all students have access to audiovisual textbooks and other books scanned online. At Sophia Academy, we seek to educate the whole student. All students take part in Art, Music, Technology, Health and Physical Education (at least 3 times weekly) which allow students to discover and hone their gifts and talents. In addition, students have the opportunity to be involved in a variety of afterschool extra-curricular activities. The small school atmosphere gives many opportunities for student leadership and involvement. Speech-Language Pathology--We have comprehensive speech and language evaluations and service at Sophia Academy for the following: apraxia of speech, articulation disorders, auditory processing disorders, expressive and receptive language disorders, cleft palate, phonological disorders, phonological processing skills, stuttering, and voice disorders. Our state-licensed speech-language pathologists hold graduate degrees and are certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA). Upon completion of the speech and evaluation, recommendations for therapeutic intervention or further testing may be made. A recent SLP evaluation and/or an IEP from an outside source also can be utilized to develop individualized therapy plans. Therapy delivery can include individual and/or small group sessions, classroom observations and intervention, and home programs. Sophia Academy also believes in equipping a child spiritually. In addition to offering Religious Education as part of the academic curriculum, the school seeks to develop Christian character by examining and highlighting Biblical character traits. Character traits have included: Wisdom, Forgiveness, Courage, Praise, Trustworthiness, Endurance, Faithfulness, Humor, Enthusiasm, Helpfulness, Reverence and Wonder. Students review and discuss the monthly character trait and verse each day, and offer prayers before each class and throughout the day. Mass is held twice a month and is a time of worship and learning scriptural principles.
